A Message from the SCALA President:
The enthusiasm and excitement of
a new school year is fueled with the prospect of endless possibilities. It is a
time to reflect on what our goals for the year are and how we propose to achieve
those goals. It is a time when we begin to formulate how we are going to
sustain the energy and how we are going to be the best role models for our
students and the best advocates for our teaching profession.
It is in that spirit that the Professional
Development leaders at Suffolk County Art Leaders Association (SCALA) and the
SCALA Executive Board have carefully and thoughtfully addressed the needs and
interests of our membership. We are offering seven new workshops. Several
engage in new technologies available to teachers in our field such as the
SMARTboard Basics
and Video Conferencing.
Another course, Inside
Contemporary Art utilizes online technologies to develop
interdisciplinary art lessons concerning contemporary art.
Autism and Emotional
Expression is a workshop that gives us a better understanding of the
autistic student in our art rooms. Of course our offerings would not be
complete without the introduction of interesting materials and techniques. This
year’s workshops include:
Shibori- Memory on Cloth,
Korean Wind Chimes and
Stained Glass Light Catcher.
New this year, we will have
community service opportunities available for students. All that needs to be
done is to contact and register with our SCALA representative. In addition, we
will continue to have our All County Senior Show, in partnership with the
Brookhaven Art and Humanities Council, the SCALA Middle School Show and the
Children’s Show. Be sure to mark your calendars for the SCALA Member’s
Invitational to be held the first two weeks of June at the
It is the mission of our
