From the Ashes
The events that had unfolded on September 11, 2001 on a
bright, crisp New York morning
are still etched in our mind’s eye years later.
As educators, it is our responsibility to pause
and pay tribute to that
historical event and to acknowledge the children of Americans
everywhere whose
lives were forever altered in the aftermath. To that end,
the Suffolk County Art
Leaders Association (SCALA) has partnered with the Art League of
Long Island (ALLI)
to host “From the Ashes”, a cooperative art effort to commemorate the
ten
year anniversary of 9/11.
A group of art educators, under the direction of raku artist,
Gina Mars, have created a series
of ceramic pieces. The raku process transforms
the ordinary surface of a clay piece into
dramatic bursts of color and
textures. This is achieved by emerging the creation into a pit of
debris that
smolders around the piece robbing its atmosphere of oxygen. The completed
pottery
will be shown together, as a collaborative piece displayed on a
sculpture stand made especially
for them. It will be on display at the
Art
League of Long Island, Dix Hills and then travel to the
Phoenix Gallery,
Bellport and then finally to
B.J. Spoke Gallery, Huntington. The pieces
can be
bought individually through a silent auction. All proceeds from the
sales of these pieces will go
to
Tuesday’s Children, a not for profit
organization that serves the members of the 9/11
community especially the
children as well as the young adults and spouses still trying to move
forward
and heal.
