NEW ORLEANS ART SUPPLY DRIVE
A MESSAGE FROM SCALA PRESIDENT,
GRACE BARRETT

  February 24, 2008

It has been nearly three years since the American public sat horrified at the images of the aftermath that Hurricane Katrina left on the southeast region of Louisiana.  Just three weeks after the August 29th, 2005 disaster, Hurricane Rita hit the southwest area of the state.  The destruction, loss of human life, dislocation of families and devastation of communities was catastrophic.  These areas are still in the process of rebuilding and trying to recover their land and human dignity.  Many schools have just reopened their doors this year, many with reduced funds and elimination of programs.  The Louisiana Children’s Museum has identified some of these schools and offers Outreach programs, such as PlayPower, to them bringing art and laughter back into the hearts and minds of the school children hardest hit by these hurricanes.

This year’s National Art Education Association’s Convention is slated to be held in the city of New Orleans in Louisiana on March 26 through the 30.  SCALA, Suffolk County Art Leaders Association, is joining with NAEA in support of the rebuilding efforts.  We have developed a partnership with Louisiana Children’s Museum and have begun an “Art Materials Drive”.  Our membership, made up of Art Teachers and School Art Directors, have “adopted” four regional schools.  One hundred percent of our contributions will go directly to those schools.

Located in St. Bernard Parish where there was 100% evacuation and 100% of their homes were lost.  These schools represent approximately 3000 students:

·         Trist Middle School: Pre-K to 8th grade

·         Gauthier Elementary School: Pre-K to 5th grade

·         Andrew Jackson Elementary School: Pre-K to 5th grade

Located in the lower 9th Ward and had the fewest Evacuees and lost 30 students during the hurricane.  They currently serve approximately 600 students.

·         Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School for Science and           Technology: Pre-K to 8th grade

We are currently accepting art supplies to be ship to the LCM by March 24, 2008.  Some Long Island Art Suppliers and local artists have made a contribution to our efforts as well.  Further, we are incorporating the spirit of our action into the education of several Long Island School District students who will benefit from a slide documentary that chronicles the collection, pick up and delivery of these supplies to the schools and Louisiana students.  By extending this opportunity to our students here on Long Island, we nurture their ability for compassion and demonstrate how art can heal as a true example of service learning.  This will hopefully motivate and empower them to develop their own community outreach endeavors.

Please support our efforts and join us in celebrating the strength of teamwork and joy in service.

Sincerely,

Grace Barrett
